Last night, Dick Goddard told me we'd be getting 1 to 4" of snow today. He was right. So we decided to go out in it and take some photos. I get strange urges at stupid times because I'm an odd little monkey like that.
At any rate, have some visual candy compliments of me and my really understanding boyfriend who drives the very light red coupe in the snow for me.
Here's the old Wendy's fast food burger joint. Like I said a few entries back, it's back in business, just not as a Wendy's... so A+.
Here's our new Dollar General. This was a Euclid PD substation for a little while. Again, A+.
They knocked down our ratty old Taco Bell and built this shiny new one. I love tacos, and I love our new Taco Bell. They still mess up my order but that's become part of the Taco Bell Experience. A++!
Here's the old familiar exit sign that's adorned the top of this blog since 2005. If they ever decide to get rid of it, I hope they give it to me (and I'm a nice girl, so they should).
And here's a video, just driving around the mall with me running my mouth. I figured since a lot of visitors used to live here, they might get a kick out of seeing the mall again.
Also, I get a ton of comments at my Fotki photo albums... don't be afraid to comment here as well! I want opinions, memories, information or just yell at me, whatever peels the banana!
Notice I added some new options on every post, be sure to digg the post once in a while!
If you live in Euclid you are either a FUCKING MORON or a FUCKING COWARD to not leave.
I live in Euclid so I guess that makes me a coward since I so clearly see what a dump it is to live in. Unfortunately my mom lives here alone and I can't just up and move. If my mom wasn't here I would be gone the next mourning.
Lets see what we got:
1.Horrible winters with a city department too stupid and to undermanned to clear the roads properly.
2.Hot sticky humid summers full of mosquito's.
3.High taxes to pay for the stupid undermanned city departments.
4.Little thugs walking around the streets and a school system that makes the Cleveland public schools look good.
5.Abandoned buildings and run down shops and stores. If you bring anything other then a fast food joint, dollar store, or 24 hour check cashing center to town the inhabitants will systematically tear it apart, until the only thing left is a skeleton of broken windows and graffiti.
6.No decent jobs unless you want to shave 10-15 years off your life being worked like a dog at Lincoln Electric.
Fuck this city so much. Fuck all the stupid people who live here who can't form a proper sentence, afford car insurance, and dress like white trash.
One day I will leave this shit hole and never come back.
To think there are people out there who live next to water, or by mountains, or in nice city districts and I am stuck here makes me want to slam a crowbar against my head. What a fucking dumb moron I am... maybe I do belong here after all.
isn't Euclid by water? The previous commenter is right. He is a fucking idiot. He/she will likely be a miserable wretch where ever he/she lives. Euclid certainly doesn't need his/her bad karma.
What's wrong with this town? And the people in it like this mall owner? Why is this mall's ownership so overzealous and anti-photography? That's quite appalling they actually chased you off the property for having a camera. What a bunch of flakes. Just who do they think they are anyway?
Enjoyed the tour, I'm likely never to come to Euclid living on the eastern edge of the US. My favorite is the Toys R Us as well; there are still some vital stores around that still use that "rainbow" look.
Euclid may just be the most fascinating, forgetten town as far as retail is concerned. There's absolutely nothing like it's "Silent Hill" ghost town appeal in the entire country.
Excellent coverage, Jen (and company). I adore your continual reporting here.
I agree with the first comment, and not just about Euclid, but Cleveland in general. The economy and job market here sucks and the attitude of the residents here continues to worsen for all the bureaucracy. NO one gets the fact that you can't replace real jobs with menial, service industry jobs and browbeating "bosses" named "Brad" or "Chad" (has to end in a "D"... like Shithead). I just can't see how smart people can stay here -- even if they want to... I guess we're all a bunch of fucking fearful and complacent cowards. If my parents were not still alive and living here (they have no desire to leave, I think) I would be long gone, too. We're a whole lot closer to Youngstown as a region than we are to Chicago. I give Cleveland another 10 years before it finally stops circling the bowl like the Tidy Man and actually goes down the proverbial toilet.
They've been saying Cleveland is on the way out for decades. Cleveland will never become as bad as Youngstown or other desolate towns, however, its never going to get better if things don't change. The problem is all the smart people leave and there's nothing to entice them to stay. Cleveland does have alot of positive (the clinic, case, federal reserve, major sports, etc.), its just the people who ruin it. Euclid, on the other hand...
I am no racist, I can prove that many times over... but it's no surprise which places in Ohio are the worst to live in. Once again, FUCK Euclid, how could anyone stay there indefinitely.
I agree with the Fuck Euclid guy, I'm in high school in Euclid and it fucking sucks, theres nothing to do, I live in the 2nd ghettoest part of Euclid and all we have is, yes, a bunch of stupid check cashing places and salons (you forgot about those stupid fucking places). Anywhere north of Interstate 90 and east of E. 200th Street is cared about in Euclid and everywhere else is overrun with bullshit.
I lived in Euclid most of my life and it was livable for many of those years. In the last 4 years it has gone from a shitty city to a dump. Much help from the corrupt local government. Just recently I saw a minority that had to carry a baseball bat while walking his very large dog. That alone shows how pathetic this city is. I was delivering to the KMART across from the mall about 5 years ago and was in the back near the dock and about 20 pigeons started to attack me for no reason. Even the FUCKING animals have a mental problem in this city.
Im 30 and grew up right next to Euclid. Ive definitely seen a change for the worse. But believe it or not the same crappy transition is happening all over the US. I moved out of Cleveland 12 years ago and a decline in a lot of places Ive lived. As time goes on the seperation between the rich and the poor will be so large that there will be no more middle class. Poor education is going to be America's downfall. Statistics show that the US spends more on education than any other nation. So why are the kids getting more stupid? Many reasons, corruption, unwilling kids, lack of discipline to name a few. Metro Cleveland's bread and butter was factories but now the same work can be done for pennies on the dollar in Malaysia so most of it is gone. Can you blame educated people going elsewhere for a better life? I cant say that for all of Cleveland, there is still some upscale areas but most of them are on the West Side.
This is why I moved to Chicago. I can't take the constant depression that the city makes you feel. Sure, there are good spots in the region (Orange, Highland Heights, Westlake, Bay Village), but everything else keeps progressively getting worst. I notice it hits the eastside more so than the westside.
I wish all the region's politicians would wise up and realize that if they don't come together and work together to better the region, we will always be passed up by everyone.
Well, move. Who cares about your parents, family or other whatevers. GET THE FUCK OUT YOURSELVES. Ohio and cleveland have a lot going for it, and most of you are to stuborn see. There is bad everwhere. I've seen it. I moved back to cle, to euclid. Its a good home. Why is it black people complain, but the ghettos are the most dangerous place to live? wouldn't you want to make your home nicer?
stupid trash.
i'm here i'm fighting to keep things alive. you all should be too. stop bitchin
fuck you loser and suck my dick. fucking white trash piece of shit.
yeah, you keep on "fighting" for euclid to get better you fucking retard.
30 years from now when this place is more of a ghetto then it already is(not sure if that is possible), you let me know how it feels being a dipshit fucking moron. K?
It's like the new Taco Bell in Euclid is a shining star is an area where the light is fading. I guess when everything is fading you have to focus on the little shining stars. There's a shining star in East Cleveland, but it's not the Taco Bell. The shining star of East Cleveland is the new Windermere Rapid Station.
The place is new and clean and looks amazing and the area surrounding it faded away years and years ago. I guess when times are hard and times will get hard for us in the near future, then I guess we have to focus on our little shining stars. It makes life a little more fun.
I drove through the Euclid Square Mall parking lot last night on my way home from EMS school at Euclid Hospital. Instead of taking 200th street or 185th street to Euclid Creek to get home, I took Babbitt Road to Euclid Square Mall. The shopping area with the new Taco Bell is right next to Euclid Square and it really doesn't look bad at all.
Euclid Square Mall on the other hand, well, they certainly did a lot of work to make the streets nice and wide leading to the mall. 260th and Babbit Road are narrow and slow except around Euclid square and there they are nice and wide and fast. As far as the mall itsself goes at night, I drove around and with the sun gone down, you don't see much and it isn't all that bad looking.
They also have nice white lights lighting it up. Well I like white lights. I don't care for orange ones. Well, anyway, not all the white lights were still working and there were several light fixtures in the parking lot with no lights working or maybe only one bulb that wasn't burnt out.
Still, the remaining white lights that were still working made the mall look pretty in it's own way. There's a piece of me that wants to get some new light bulbs, sneak into the Euclid Square parking lot and change some light bulbs. Burnt out light bulbs are a pet peeve of mine!
For a moment, the blog and comments seemed interesting. Then all of it seems to head straight into the gutter.
Things are tough. Things are getting tougher. And without substantial business investment, community involvement, and solid community planning, things will not get better.
So....which one of you Einsteins are wiling to step up to the plate.
If you don't, nothing is going to change ANYWHERE you move. And if you can't, at least stop insulting those who are trying to make things better. Start a business, invest in a local business. Or at least do business with a local merchant. There are several good places left.
Cowards abandon things, plain and simple. And they try to justify it even when they don't have one shred of logic or reason. And when they run out of cheap excuses, they think they are getting somewhere by using language that only lessens their credibility further.
So go ahead and keep up the crying and whining with a street-dirt filthy mouth. Until you can come up with, and create something better, your just the evening's entertainment...and not very good entertainment at that.
i have mixed opinions about Euclid. I'm currently a senior at EHS, and I've lived there all my life. I can't disagree that Euclid has lost its luster. when i was a kid i remember Euclid being a booming area. Richmond mall sucked, and Euclid's mall was doing very well. at around 1998 things started going downhill. Kaufman's moved to Richmond, and most other stores there soon followed. the southeast part of Euclid is now business-dead. 200th is still doing fairly well, and i consider 185th to be fairly run-down, it can be much worse, but i consider it part of Cleveland anyway. i live right outside of "downtown" Euclid, and i think that even though businesses are moving out, the ones that are there are doing pretty well. the one thing i have to disagree with the "fuck euclid" guys is the school system. i love our school system. even though we don't have as much funding as we need, we make due with what we have. i am involved with many extra-curriculars there. We are not "ghetto" (for the most part). its just the few people who think ghetto is "cool," give us a bad image, and then pisses everyone else off for making us look bad. I love my Euclid high school, and i wouldn't want to go anywhere else.
