A bit of nostalgia and a whole lot of foresight.
Published in the March 3, 1977 edition of the Euclid News Journal. I've had a copy of this for a while and the first time I read it it was almost too ironic to believe. Maybe they should have used ALL CAPS.

Looting a mall that just opened? Crazy...it's also ironic that the soiree was catered by another defunct local business, Hough Catering.

How incredibly irronic! I was just googling Hough Bakery, to find out what has become of it. And decided to check in on the DeadEuclid blog. Funny and strange that the article about the opening of the E.S.M. was catered by Hough......BTW Hough Bakery lives through Archie's Bakery http://cleveland.citysearch.com/profile/7981386/cleveland_oh/archie_s_lakeshore_bakery.html

AWESOME blog. I grew up around Euclid in the during the early 80's. I left the area in 1990 and recently visited some family. I was shocked at what a dump this city is now. It is really sad what has happenned. I remember going to the Euclid Square Mall as a child. The game room, don't remember the name. ALso the Karmelkorn and the Euclidean Room. WHat a shame.
I remember when Kmart opened up on 260th and Euclid in the early 80's. The property had sat vacant for years. Now it is vacant again. In fact, I remember when that whole block opened up with the fast food chains. Now it sits empty. What a shame.
Anyways, GREAT JOB with this site. Keep up the work!

Derek - Thanks for the comment. What really got me about this clipping is how the writer pleaded, basically, for this mall to succeed and that it would need the help of the community to do so, and I certainly don't think it's gotten that support.
Anon - I had NO idea Hough Bakery was still in existence in any capacity. Thanks for the link!
Steve - Thanks for the comment. I've gotten some flack from people about this blog but for the most part reactions are good (to a kind of bad situation). I also get the 'quit yer bitchin' type comments and I'm not complaining, I'm trying to shed light on what has happened to this place and just what a crying shame it all really is... so I guess thanks for the compliments and thanks for getting it, ha!

Hi Folks! Great site. I love it.
I'd LOVE to see more photos of the abandoned / dilapdated Euclid Ave. corridor. Could you please post photos of the following?? These would add nicely to your blog!
1. Parklawn Gardens
2. Babbit / Euclid Ave Intersection - where the Bali Hai used to be...I'll bet that who strip mall is abandoned.
3. Euclid House / Imperial House Apartments (near babbitt and euclid)- I'll bet that is a roach motel by now.
4. The old AM Pena Building...Is this also abandoned? HAHA
5. The other abandoned strip malls along Euclid Ave - between Wickliffe border and 260th.
Thanks!

WOW! I can remember a time not too long ago when Euclid Square Mall was the premier attraction and Richmond Town Square was the dump. How the tables have turned!
I took a ride down Euclid Ave. between Babbit and 26oth. Nothing but dollar stores, nail shops, check-cashing, Rent-A-Center, etc. Noticed the old Richmond Restaurant where I used to stop for a bite every now and then finally gave up and boogied on down the line. Thought about stopping at the KFC on the corner just for old time's sake but decided to crusie on by when I noticed the large gang of hoodlums milling around out front.
I live in Brecksville now which, by all accounts is like night and day over Euclid - LITERALLY. But who knows? The way things are going, Brecksville could become the next Euclid and Euclid the next East Cleveland.
The Northcoast sure ain't what it used to be. Like Bruce Springsteen sang, "Everybody's leavin town now, leavin their friends and their homes." The loss of jobs, population, etc is putting a drain on the whole area. Remember Fisher Auto Body down on Euclid Ave? TRW? That big chemical plant behind the railroad tracks? I knew a bunch of people that worked at some of those places when I was a kid. At least Euclid still has Lincoln Electric. Did you know that back in the day Cleveland was the 5th largest city in the US? A manufacturing powerhouse with over 1 million people in residence. Those days are long gone.

My grandfather was Ken Pile, the third son of Lionel, founder of Hough. Although I've pretty much lived in IL my entire life, I'll never forget the trips back to OH and the tours of the bakery that always ended in the cake decorating department! :) After the bakery closed, my grandpa knew all of the employees who started bakeries. He had several that he visited regularly, but Archie's was his favorite!

I just happened upon this site and it's a heart breaker! I opened Euclid Square Mall for JVJ and we were all so proud of it. We won a national award when we held the "Euclid Beach" promotion. I'm still in the mall business out here in Southern California and it's sad to see what's left of ESM.
